Web colors are colors used in designing web pages, and the methods for describing and specifying those colors. Colors may be specified as an RGB (red, green, blue) triplet or in hexadecimal format (a hex triplet).
- Color values are indicated using their hexadecimal number for the combination of RGB values, each represented by eight bits (A bit is the basic unit of information in computing and digital communications.)
- The lowest # is 00 (black) and the highest is FF (white). There are 16 million possible hex combinations and only 256 are safe for the web.
- There are 16 color names that can be used in the place of hex #’s in accordance with the W3C HTML 4.o standard. All other colors should be indicated by their hexadecimal value.
Both the Web hex #’s and names are represented in the quick reference chart below.
When working with color it is also a good idea to keep a color wheel handy to reference primary, secondary, and tertiary colors of pigment. Here is another quick reference chart to help you find your perfect web color.
